The Lamborghini Huracan was unveiled in 2014 by Automobili Lamborghini SpA at the Geneva Auto Show, the successor to the Lamborghini Gallardo took a few years to develop, but it quickly became obvious Lamborghini wasn't just working on the regular production model for this new V10 ... less than 5 months after the LP610-4 Lamborghini showed the track-oriented LP620-2 Super Trofeo race car.

Eligible for the 2015 season of the one-make Lamborghini Super Trofeo series in Europe, North America and Asia, this new V10 model would replace the well-known Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo that was racing only 2 years (since 2013) after the latter took over from the original 2008 Gallardo Super Trofeo ... the series evolved quickly in a matter of years, now with the latest Huracan used as a base.

At this time there is already a new evolution of the Huracan Super Trofeo in real life, the EVO, but in the scale model world we've been pushed towards sealed resin models like the ones from Looksmart ... until AUTOart released this amazing looking 1/18 scale model of the official Lamborghini race car, so I already own a Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo from Looksmart in the original presentation livery from 2014, Grigio Titans with the famous #63 number and the large Blancpain watch on the roof (which is mounted wrong on the Looksmart by the way).

So I didn't get that same livery from AUTOart, instead I went for this amazing looking plain white finish ... which happens to be the livery these cars were delivered in to the United States to run in the 2015 Super Trofeo North America series ... all of those cars where finished in white before the race teams would apply their own livery, and I rather like a white race car from Lamborghini to be honest.

The scale model

While AUTOart also has the street version of the Huracan, the LP610-4 in their line-up, which comes with full opening details, this new Huracan Super Trofeo comes with opening doors only, probably for some cost saving as this model is sold about €40 cheaper than the all-opening version ... it would have been nice to be able to admire the modified engine for this Super Trofeo, and with their Gallardo Super Trofeo AUTOart used a removable engine cover with small magnets, which would have been great on this Huracan too ... but that didn't happen, so we have to live with it now.

Keep in mind, before AUTOart came up with this Huracan Super Trofeo the only other option in 1/18 scale was the more expensive Looksmart version, which is a sealed resin model, so with two opening doors, we've made progress nonetheless ... so I'm not going to keep focusing on that, also note the Huracan models from AUTOart are Diecast Composite now, that has been a controversy in the collector's world too, I for one have no issues with this, I built plastic model kits in the past, so why would I complain about this now, some state the fit and finish is bad, but again, I don't have those issues on the composite AUTOart models I own.

So I specifically bought the white (Bianco Isis - 81557) livery Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo from AUTOart, the same model also comes in the presentation livery Grigio Titans (81559) with all the decals and in orange (Arancio Borealis - 81558), but as I already own several Gallardo race cars in plain white, I wanted to continue this theme with the Huracan race cars (I also own the white Huracan GT3 race car by the way).

I really like how the bright white body contrasts with the black carbon fiber parts on this model, the lower front splitter, the side sills, the massive rear diffuser and the even bigger rear wing with clear aluminum struts holding her in place, if you take a very close look at the Huracan Super Trofeo you will notice that virtually no part of the street version has been used for this new race car, up front we get a completely new bumper with massive air intake complete with red tow hook, the front fenders are replaced with units featuring vents above the wheels, the doors now come with a carbon fiber panel inside and plastic side windows complete with sliding section.

Behind the doors, we find two large air intakes carved into the bodywork, while additional vents are fitted behind the side windows, finished in clear carbon fiber. The engine cover is totally different from the street version too, with a quick release system for easy access in real life and ten 'holes' that actually remind me of the engine cover on the Gallardo Super Trofeo. You can even see some details through these holes of what might be an engine hiding underneath, but as I said, it doesn't open on the AUTOart model, and I haven't taken apart my model to verify just how much engine detail is still present.

One of the most impressive features on the Huracan Super Trofeo race car has to be that massive rear wing, 'hanging' from her struts, this clear carbon fiber aerofoil is simply amazing, and AUTOart captured the details very nicely on this model, sure there are those tiny screws visible, but that's part of the model anyway, and it makes her look even more 'purposeful' as a no-nonsense race car.

At the rear we find very nice, open grilles that show detail behind them, the two high-mounted exhausts look right on scale with the rest of the car, and you can even see the air jacks that are used to lift the car during a pitstop, a very nice detail that continues with the wheels, and their central lock, which differs from shade depending on which side of the car they are fitted, also note the disk brakes are grooved steel units with Brembo calipers for this Super Trofeo, just like on the real car.

On the inside we find an OMP racing seat with full racing harness, a special steering wheel with the necessary switches and a new central console with race oriented switches, on the other side we find a set of tubes and a canister on the floor ... while an elaborate roll-over cage is fitted ... just in case of an accident ... it all fits the race style of the car perfectly, and is remeniscent of the real car all the way.

Comparison

I know many people have been wondering about the difference between the earlier, more expensive, Looksmart version and this new AUTOart version of the Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo, and I did buy one of the Looksmart 1/18 ones for my collection, but not at the regular MSRP of €269. As I stated in my review of that model, I believe that's too expensive ... we are talking about a sealed resin model, and honestly, the details on the Looksmart model aren't a finely made as the ones on this new AUTOart model ... Looksmart even used sealed grills on the shoulder air intakes, and while the grills in the rear fascia are open, nothing is showing behind them ... so in the end, at this period in time ... these new AUTOart 1/18 Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo are the better model to add to your collection, don't even bother with the Looksmart anymore ... or you are looking for a very specific team livery, in that case, the Looksmart Huracan Super Trofeo might be the one to get instead.

Bottom line

One thing that is different between this white livery AUTOart and the real Huracan Super Trofeo that were seen in the US, is the front bumper, the center intake on this scale model is black, which looks great, but on the real car this was white too, only the lower splitter fin on the front bumper was black in real life ... but other than that I couldn't find many difference, so this model really is a very nice, scaled down replica of the actual Lamborghini Huracan LP620-2 Super Trofeo race car for the 2015 season.

So is this a model that you should add to your collection? I would say ... yes, indeed. This is once again one of AUTOart's finest, the details are there, it is all nicely made and finely rendered in 1/18 scale. And sure, only the doors open, but that's fine ... how many of your scale models are on display all opened up? Not that much I guess, so yes ... it would have been nice to be able to see the engine, but at the end of the day this model has some amazing shelve presence and it looks really good in this all white finish.

Should you go for the presentation livery, the orange one, or this white one ... that is your personal choice, in my case, as I already had the presentation version in Grigio Titans I opted to buy the white one, but if you don't own that Looksmart one I would suggest getting the AUTOart made Huracan Super Trofeo in the presentation livery.
