By now we all know what the Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 stood for, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the late Ferruccio Lamborghini who founded Automobili Lamborghini SpA back in 1963, only 20 coupes would be built, all very bespoke finished, with one of the most impressive finished being a glossy clear carbon fiber bodywork that came at a hefty price tag of €300,000 as an option on a €1,750,000 base price for the Centenario ... and still, by the time we got the see this car at the 2016 Geneva Auto Show all 20 units were already sold out.
As usual MR was the first to release a 1/18 scale model of the Lamborghini Centenario, and they even replicated the impressive carbon fiber bodywork, but at €499 I just has to pass ... so I was rather happy when I learned that Maisto would be doing the Centenario too in 1/18, naturally this would be no comparison to MR, but at less than 10% of the price I was ready for some compromise.
In the end, Maisto released three versions of the Centenario, two in their Special Edition series, a grey one, and this red one, and one in the Exclusive Series finished in yellow, the latter being the high-end edition from Maisto with full side windows and much better detailing.
Naturally I couldn't resist getting all three models, and I have to admit, even with a €24 premium, the yellow Exclusive Series version is the one to get, just because it is the only one with the yellow stitching and pattern on the seats, just like we've seen on the press car, currently still owned by the factory.
Maisto calls this version the red one, but in fact, it is a special kind of Arancio if you ask me, looks more like a shade of orange then red, this version has black livery and an all-black interior, which happens to look a bit dull, to be honest.
One of the very first Lamborghini Centenario coupe delivered to her owner was in fact finished in orange, not exactly like this Maisto one (the real car had black mirrors for instance and no white line on the roof), but still we could say this Maisto model is 'based' on one of the 20 real cars.
On the grey version this isn't so obvious, but on both the yellow and this red version, Maisto should really have added a touch of black paint on the side pillars for the interior, that would have made such a difference in overall impression ... but I guess the market Maisto is aiming these models at isn't that focused on details as I am ... a few screws on the bottom of the car hold it together, so it is rather easy to open up the Maisto Centenario and add the satin black paint ourselves.
Bottom line
In the end this red (I call it orange) version of the Lamborghini Centenario by Maisto would be at the bottom of my wishlist, behind the more expensive, but better detailed yellow one ... but also behind the grey one ... I would advice Maisto to create a grey version in their Exclusive Series, that would be the best of two worlds ... somehow I don't think Maisto will consider doing an Exclusive Series edition of the Centenario in a carbon fiber body.
Also note these Special Edition Centenario come with a clear taillight while the Exclusive Series gets a red taillight fitted, one more difference between these two versions.
