Back in 2014 the Lamborghini Asterion LPI910-4 came as a bit of a surprise at the Paris Motor Show, people were expecting a new GT from Sant'Agata, perhaps even the production version of the Estoque shown at the same show in 2008 ... but the Asterion would show a different future for Lamborghini ... this bright Blu Electra finished Bull had a V10 engine from the Huracan fitted behind the two seats, but in addition, three electric engines were fitted to boost power to a very impressive 910 hp, hence the LPI910 designation, LP stands for 'Longitudinale Posteriore', the position of the conventional engine, I stands for 'ibrido' for the hybrid power.
With the Aventador and Huracan being true sportscars, the Asterion was more of a GT with a luxurious interior finished in Bianco Celaeno (Ivory) and Marrone Atis (brown) leather combined with lots of Forged Composite material to save weight, a 7 speed dual clutch transmission allows for easy driving despite the high power output, a fuel consumption of only 4.2 liters/100km is indeed very impressive for a V10 powered car, the entire Hybrid technology adds 250kg to the overall weight of this Bull and you are able to drive about 50 km on electric power alone, enough to get you out of the city and onto the highway where you can enjoy the entire package of 910 hp.
At a certain time there was a rumor about a limited production run for the Asterion, but in the end this never materialized, so the only option of owning a Lamborghini Asterion is buying a scale model ... but only MR Collection had a 1/18 scale model of this unique Lamborghini and we all know how expensive these sealed resin kits from Italy can be.
MR Collection has a habit of doing a lot of fantasy shades when it comes to their models, the same happened with the Veneno and the Sesto Elemento ... if only one shade exists in real life why would you bother with other shades ... still, there is a market for those I guess, so if you want you can get an Asterion in Verde Ithaca, Nero Nemesis, Bianco ... and even pink ... but you know me, I only want to get the original shade as seen on the real car ... and that one has been sold out a long time ago by MR.
Now MR did two versions of the correct Blu Electra finished Lamborghini Asterion LPI910-4, one being what they call the Villa d'Este edition that came with black windows and one in Blu Electra but with normal windows ... I actually prefer the latter one because you can admire the interior that way ... remember nothing opens on these MR models, so having black windows might look exactly like the press car and the Asterion as shown in Paris ... but you can't see anything of that bright ivory and brown interior.
I have never been a fan of the Forged Composite material Lamborghini has been using a lot, it is a lightweight composite that allows more complex shaped when compared to carbon fiber, and the Asterion uses a lot of Forged Composite, both on the outside and on the interior ... MR made an effort to replicate this nicely on their model, it might look weird at first sight ... but even in real life it looks strange, so that's not a problem on this model, it is a feature.
The Lamborghini Asterion had 20 inch wheels up front and 21 inch at the rear, in a design that reminds us of the Giano wheels from the Huracan, but with additional features ... like central locking for one, and on they cover massive disk brakes ... all very nicely reproduced in 1/18 by MR, they even added a Pirelli script on the tires.
Normally these models are selling at around €400 each, the original Villa d'Este version perhaps even more, but this one I located in Germany from a collector that was getting rid of a few of his models, so I managed to score the exact one I wanted for a very decent price ... didn't take me too long to decide I wanted to add it, and once she arrived I was very, very impressed with the paint finish on this car.
I have a few MR 1/18 models already, and while they are very good quality I have to admit the metallic blue on this Asterion is just on another level, almost liquid like ... and this being the 700th Lamborghini model I was able to my collection makes her even more special.
