It seems like there is a new 1/18 scale resin model car builder popping up every week lately, some are decent, some really aren't to be honest, and the weird thing is that most of these tend to stick to tuning models, not factory original standard models, I guess it has something to do with licensing, whichever it is, check out this GL Model, 1/18 scale, Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster LB-Works ... what's in a name, right?
I have several 1/18 scale Lamborghini Aventador LB-Works in my collection already, from either AUTOart or GT-Spirit/Kyosho, but so far I didn't have a Roadster widebody version yet, so when I saw an announcement for GL Model set to release just that version, I was interested, but I was a little hesitant, I never heard about this builder, nor had I ever seen a model in real life, but the 'prototype' photos looked nice, still, I didn't pre-order any of the different shades GL Model were set to release.
When I saw a listing for this white 'discoloration' version on a local second-hand site I was intrigued, this is in fact a very special pearl-metallic white paint that changes hue depending on the light, from white to green over purple, rather nice to be honest ... but that's were the positives started to become outweighed by the flaws on this model.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice model, but once again it's not a €250 model in my opinion, more like a €100 to €150 model as it's a hair above most GT-Spirit models so far, but it doesn't outshine the latter two-fold if you ask me.
The pearl white metallic paint is applied very, very thick on this model, now I know you need a lot of white paint to fully cover, but this one is edging on being ridiculous, still, it has a nice shine, and the 'flip-flop' effect it visible when you look at the model, and then you start looking very closely and notice some oddities.
I have seen this on many of these resin LB-Works Lamborghini models, the rear wheels are just too narrow, remember these come with ultra-wide wheels at the rear, lowered to the maximum on air-ride, and still, most of these ' off-brand' builders mess up the rear wheels and don't fit properly scaled down 355/25ZR21 wheels, which makes the model look weird from the rear.
This is an Aventador Roadster, so it comes with removable roof panels in real life, most of the 1/18 resin models have a single roof section you can remove, and this GL Model version does too, it's a glossy black part that fits very well indeed, but when you remove it, there is a black line at the top of the side windows, what's up with that GL Model? The Aventador has frameless side windows, both on the Coupe and on the Roadster, so why would you put a frame on these side windows? And to make things worse, on the 'prototype' photos there aren't even any side windows fitted, to be honest, on a Roadster I wouldn't even mind if they didn't fit side windows at all, heck, even MR doesn't fit side windows on the Aventador Roadster.
To complete the review, take a look at the close-up of the driver's headlight, the cover isn't even fitted correctly on it, and one corner is pointing upward, so in this case, I think this will be my first, and last GL Model 1/18 Lamborghini model to find her way into my collection, this isn't a €250 model in my opinion, sorry.
