Back in the late Eighties, Lamborghini had a three car lineup, much like we see today, you had the flagship V12, the Lamborghini Countach, with the Revuelto being the current counterpart, but you also had the ‘entry-level’ or Baby Lambo, the Jalpa V8, the predecessor to the Temerario, and as a grandparent to the current Urus we had the massive Lamborghini LM002, the Rambo Lambo, the unbeatable, V12-powered behemoth that could concur the dessert without breaking a sweat.

I might have glorified the Lamborghini LM002 here, but while the Countach got me interested in Lamborghini as a car maker, the LM002 completely blew me away … this was an utilitarian off-road vehicle, powered by a massive 5.2-liter V12 engine delivering 450 hp, and while the LM002 put a massive 2700 kg / 5954 lbs on the scale, it could still reach a top speed of 210 Km/h or 130 Mph … back in 1986, and while having four people inside the car.

And lets not forget the sheer size of the Lamborghini LM002, this off-road stood nearly 2m tall, at 1850 mm / 72.71 in to be exact while she was 2000 mm / 78.6 in wide and 4900 mm / 192.57 in long, that’s a big car in the Eighties, that taller, wider, and longer than a full-size Range Rover back in those days, the LM002 was an impressive, loud piece of automotive art, a rarity because of the steep MSRP in 1988 of USD 125,500, which would be a little over $350,000 in 2026, which could explain why only 301 units of the LM002 were ever built at Sant’Agata.

Save to say I rather like the Lamborghini LM002, hence I’ve collected quite a few scale models of this model already, and I for one am actually eagerly awaiting the upcoming AUTOart model that should be available by the Summer of 2026, but for now let’s take a look at this new Schuco model that has been released recently, albeit as a sealed resin model, nothing opens, so we can’t take a look at the massive V12 engine up front, but we can peak inside and check out the interior, in classic tan leather with wood finish on the dashboard and central console, exactly as it would be on the real car.

This Schuco-made 1/18-scale Lamborghini LM002 is listed as a 1986 Saudi Arabian Army version, which would make it a very early production run, as the LM002 was only introduced in 1986, and that does show in a few details.

Most telling of this being an early LM002 version is the engine cover, take a closer look to the large, bulky and angular ‘boxes’ on the engine cover which are indicative of the fact there is a Countach derived 5.2-Liter V12 hiding underneat, with six dual carburattors, a later evolution of the LM002 would use a fuel-injected V12 engine that didn’t need these large boxed on top of the engine cover.

Another indication of this being an early model is the wheels; the steel wheels were used at the beginning of the LM002 production. Lamborghini fitted OZ-Wheels on the LM002, possibly as an option at first, but I don’t think many fuel-injected LM002 came with these steel wheels towards the end of production in 1992.

I have to admit I wasn’t expecting too much from this Schuco model of the Lamborghini LM002, after seeing their tractor arrive damaged, and the blue Countach S having a few issues too, my hopes weren’t too high for this large and heavy model. But she arrived in perfect condition, inside a rather special, white cardboard box, and this LM002 also comes with a display case … which I have to admit was really tightly fitted inside the box.

So how would I rate this sand-colored Lamborghini LM002 1/19 scale model? I think it’s a very nice model to add to the collection. This is a classic, understated color combination on this utilitarian model. This specific model clearly shows the fact that Lamborghini didn’t mean to build the LM002 as a luxury SUV but more as a rugged, very capable, off-road vehicle.

I paid €180 for this one, and when I compare it to the GT Spirit Lamborghini LM002 I have in the collection since 2019, paid €110 for those, I must admit this Schuco isn’t any better, if not slightly less detailed, a little more rough around the edges, if you know what I mean.

The Lamborghini LM002 by GT Spirit

Don’t get me wrong, this new Schuco model is very, very nice, but if you look really close, you can find a few air bubble holes in the casting. But other than that, the Schuco is a great example of a basic Lamborghini LM002, while the white-on-red GT Spirit or the black-on-white Kyosho release show a more luxurious version of the same car, so for me, this Schuco really deserved a spot in my collection, and I am very happy I’ve been able to add it.
